"The VALOR internship at the Jesse Brown VA has been a rewarding and challenging learning experience. This position provided me with exposure to many different areas of nursing within the hospital setting, while also offering the consistency of a home unit, where I got to work alongside nurses and other staff. This program allowed me to experience and embody the role of a nurse and learn many skills, while benefiting from the oversight and teaching of experienced nurse preceptors. The best part is getting to work with veterans; it is a huge privilege to get to serve the men and women who made great sacrifices for our freedom. I would highly recommend the VALOR program!"

  • Esther Carrick, 2017-2018 VALOR student, BSN Senior

“I highly recommend applying for the VALOR position. This residency is the closest that you can come to working as a RN prior to graduating and passing boards. Working with veterans has been extremely rewarding because they are some of the most generous, kind people that you will meet. If you think that you may want to work in Med/Surg, ICU, ER, Cardiac cath, or clinic, this is the perfect way to hone in on which you'd like as you spend time in each specialty. You may be able to select your home unit as well; I am in the ER and have had the opportunity to learn from the most talented and smart nurses that I have ever worked with. I hope you put your best foot forward with your application because it is very competitive! Good luck!”

  • Giles Howard, 2016-2017 VALOR student, May 2017 BSN graduate

"The VALOR internship at Jesse Brown VA gives you an amazing opportunity to work alongside fantastic nurses and to take your clinical skills to the next level. The experiences you get there also expose you to endless possibilities in the nursing field you may not even be aware of. I felt extremely confident in clinical after completing this internship and I think that I am much more prepared for my first job as an RN than many of my classmates. If all that wasn't enough, I found it extremely rewarding to work with veterans. After all, the best way to thank a veteran for their service is to take care of them when they come home."

  • Anastasiya Woodard, 2015-2016 VALOR student, May 2016 BSN graduate
